Features of Folding Knives

Posted on 2023-02-032023-02-03 by Holly J. Roy

When shopping for folding knives, there are several things that you’ll want to consider. These include blade length, full tang, and assisted opening mechanisms.

Side-opening

Side-opening features of folding knives can vary greatly. For example, you’ll find knives that can be opened with one hand and automatic knives that require two hands to open. There are also different locking mechanisms, and you will want to choose the best option for your needs.

Generally, side-opening features are safe and can be very convenient. Some knives Canada are equipped with safety locks that prevent accidental closures. These knives are usually safer than automatic knives, but they will take more time to open and close.

The side-opening features of folding knives range from a simple thumb stud to a full-fledged assisted-opening mechanism. Each element has its advantages and disadvantages.

Thumb studs are the most common type of one-hand opening feature. This small hardware attaches to the blade and extends it when pushed forward. It can also be used to flip the knife open.

Full tang

Full-tang folding knives are more durable and robust than their partial counterparts. They are also heavier and offer better balance. Because of their strength, these blades are recommended for demanding cuts. This type of knife is also recommended for outdoor activities.

The tang of a full-tang folding knife runs entirely through the handle and extends at least halfway through the grip portion of the handle. It is typically a solid metal part but may also be encased with two handle scales. These are fastened to the tang with various methods.

Full-tang knives are more expensive than their partial-tang counterparts. It is mainly because of the use of steel in the blade. It would be best if you also thought about the handle’s weight. If you want a lighter blade, you can try a hidden tang.

Another type of tang is the push tang. It is a variation of the partial tang. A push tang is a rabbeted tang that is pushed into a pre-manufactured handle.

Assisted-opening mechanism

If you’re a fan of folding knives, consider looking into a spring-assisted opening mechanism for your knife. The blade may open or lock automatically upon pressing a button or a thumb stud.

There are several locking systems available for folding knives. A common type of locking mechanism is a liner lock. However, this mechanism can be difficult to manipulate and prevents the blade from moving.

Another type of lock is the plunger type. In this instance, the plunger engages the tang and disengages. However, there are better methods to use. This is not recommended.

Another type of mechanism on a folding knife is a front flipper. This device has a small, disk-like stud on the top of the blade. There are several locking systems available for folding knives.

An alternative type of folding knife is the switchblade. Switchblades have a natural inclination to open. They also feature a spring-loaded mechanism. These models are easier to manipulate and are suitable for one-handed openings.

Blade length

The blade length of folding knives can vary, depending on the style and brand. It can make a difference in how mobile or discreet you want your pocket knife to be. Typically, the longer the blade, the better.

A curved blade can be handy for opening boxes or cutting cords but could be better for everyday carry. Consider a stainless steel knife if you need a knife with high corrosion resistance and hardness. These materials are also a good choice if you work in a humid or aggressive environment.

A needle-point blade will work well if you need a knife for self-defense. However, these types of blades are rare on folding knives.

When it comes to a tactical folding knife, a blade that is less than two and a half inches long is usually more helpful. While not as strong or long, these knives are perfect for chopping, opening boxes, and other general household tasks.
